Im Projekt Green Urban Youth, in dem wir uns mit nachhaltigem Leben im urbanen Raum auseinandersetzen, standen genau genommen sogar zwei Jugendbegegnungen an.
Vom 22. August bis zum 28. August trafen sich junge Menschen aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet und Tel-Aviv-Jaffa (Israel) in Berlin und setzen sich in zahlreichen Workshops und Ausflügen mit Nachhaltigkeit, Stadtgärtnern, Jugendbeteiligung und Aktivismus in der Stadt auseinander. Nach einer kurzen Verschnaufpause ging es dann vom 31. August bis zum 06. September nach Tel-Aviv-Jaffa. Auch hier, unter der heißen Mittelmeersonne, spielt Stadtnatur eine bedeutende Rolle. Inspirierend waren in diesem Kontext nicht zuletzt der Schulgarten unseres Freundes Shamir mit über 250 Obstbäumen und die hydroponische Farm auf dem Dach der Dizengoff-Mall; Shopping und Nachhaltigkeit kann also doch zusammengehen. In einem großen Bogen begleitete uns über die gesamte Zeit natürlich auch die Auseinandersetzung mit der Shoah und dem Nationalsozialismus. Insbesondere der Besuch in Yad Vashem wird in Erinnerung bleiben. Hierbei stellten sich die jungen Menschen auch der Frage nach der Bedeutung des Gedenkens im Kontext der Umwelt- und Klimakrise. Einhellige Antwort: die globalen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit lassen sich nicht im Konflikt lösen. Im Kampf für eine nachhaltige globale Gesellschaft müssen wir zusammenstehen, Ausgrenzung, Diskriminierung und gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit haben hier keinen Platz.

Green Urban Youth – this is the name of our Israeli-German exchange program. Our delegation is very diverse, containing Arab, German, Israeli and Ukrainian participants. Currently we are stationed in Jaffa, Israel, where we are spending about a week doing activities together. But at the time of writing this, we have already spent a week in Berlin and 6 days in Israel, which unfortunately means that our time together is coming to an end.
The name of our program already portrays a good idea of what our project is about: sustainability and environmental protection in the city. These are very important topics to us, because of the environmental and climate crisis, overfishing, the extinction of species and so forth. We know our generation will be the one who will suffer the most, but we can also prevent the worst. Our group believes that the climate crisis is a global problem and only as a global community working together we can change the outcome. With this project we try to make a start for us teenagers into making the earth a better place for all of us.
In both countries we did a lot of workshops on sustainability, but of course, sightseeing was also on our list. For example, we did a tour of old Jaffa here in Israel, went to the museum of natural history and we have also been to Jerusalem and Yad Vashem, because we are sure: to shape the future we must learn about the past. Furthermore, we do not only learn about different environmental projects in each country, we also learn about each country’s cultures and struggles which helps to understand each other better. But one of the most important things we learned is that even though we live in different regions of the world with different climates and grew up in different cultures, deep down we are equal. This is giving us a lot of hope and strength to tackle the challenges ahead.
